Building a private social network for an older audience to share family memories across any device
What We Did
How We Built It
Sharing family memories across generations is harder than it sounds, especially for an older demographic that isn’t fully at home with mainstream social platforms. The tools that exist for photo and video sharing are built for a younger, more technically fluent audience, with interfaces that assume a familiarity with social media conventions that many older users don’t have. There was no private, family-focused platform designed for the way an older generation wants to share memories: with narration, with context, with an interface that doesn’t require a tutorial. The people who most want to document and share their family history often have the least access to tools that make it easy. Memree was built to close that gap.
We built Memree on Laravel with Inertia and React on the front end as a private social platform for families. Users can upload photos and videos, record narrations over them, and create personal films that live in a family-only space. The interface was designed for simplicity: every interaction works without a guide, on whatever device the user picks up. A built-in chat and multi-channel notification system that reaches users through the app, by text, or by email keeps the whole family connected regardless of how they prefer to receive information. Memree is built as a progressive web app so it works on any device without requiring an app store download, removing one of the most common barriers for less technical users.
Memree gives families a private place to preserve and share memories in a format that actually works for the people who most want to do it. The narration and video features let older family members tell stories in their own voice alongside photos and footage, which is something no general social platform makes easy. The multi-channel notification system means family members across different devices and habits can all participate without being left out. The PWA format removes the friction of app installation, which matters significantly for the target audience. The platform does what it set out to do: make sharing family memories something an older generation can do on their own terms.
